Chippys. I love them. Who wouldn't?
If you don't know by now what I mean by the word "Chippys", I simply mean chips, as in potato chips.
You know...Lays...Doritos...Pringles...etc.
But I call them Chippys. Capitalized. At all times.
Reason being...I was teaching a class one day, going over food vocabulary. As soon as I pointed to the picture of french fries, my class of adult students quickly yelled "chips!"
CHIPS?
CHIPS!?!?!?
Yes, my dear American brethren...
These poor, unsuspecting Spaniards have been corrupted by the ever-faulty British, YET-AGAIN. You know, I gave it some time. I accepted their peculiar and sometimes eerie way of spelling and pronunciation. But it has finally gone too far.
Favourite.
Colour.
Centre.
And now...CHIPS?!
BLASPHEMY!
It was the straw that broke the camel's back. From that moment forward, my students have been prohibited by their all-mighty professor (ME) from ever referring to french fries as chips.
Anyways...back to the evolution of the word CHIPPY...
I was telling this horrifying tale to a good friend of mine from back home, and he, too, was awestruck. I then decided that instead of referring to fried potato slices as chips, I would instead call them CHIPPYS, to avoid further confusion while culture-switching. And there you have it.
That ending was disgustingly anti-climactic.
